Adams School is committed to improving our students’ reading skills each and every day.
Our library is open to all students every single school day.
During the 2013-14 school year there were over 52,000 check-outs
from Adams School library!
We have over 11,500 books and hundreds of new books are added every year. We have books available at levels from beginning readers to 9th grade reading levels. Our books cover California State Standards for kindergarten through 6th grade.
All students Gr 1-6 can check-out 4 books at a time. Books are due after one week, but can be renewed if necessary. Kindergartners can check out books if their parents fill out a Parent Request Form, available in the library or from the kindergarten teacher.
In addition, all Pre-K, kinder and 1st grade classes come to the library every week for read-aloud Story Time.
Parents are financially responsible for any lost or damaged library books.
Accelerated Reader
Every class at Adams participates in the Accelerated Reader (A.R.) reading program. Students are tested to determine their current reading level. They check out books within a range at that level. They then take self-directed quizzes on the computer for each book they read. As they increase their reading comprehension their reading level is adjusted upward. Teachers are able to monitor each individual student’s progress and adjust that student’s goals accordingly. Students get immediate feedback on their reading progress. Weekly recognition is given to students who have met or exceeded their AR goals.
As the librarian here, it’s wonderful to see the students’ continually growing excitement about reading. Regardless of their individual reading level ALL students are experiencing success while improving their reading ability.
Books! Books! Books! More Sources for AR Books!
You have additional opportunities for getting your children AR books besides our school library.
Go to the web-site: www.arbookfind.com
Here you can look up the title of any book and see:
1) If that book is part of the AR quiz program
2) What its reading level is.
If it’s an AR book, your student can read that book and take an AR quiz on it in their classroom, no matter where they got the book (home, friend, public library or book store)
**Your student still needs to stay within the reading range the teacher has determined in order to take a quiz,
Orange County Public Libraries even have computers available for your use so you can look titles up before checking books out for free!
